01

What it means

A 主理人 (zhuli ren) is generally a founder-operator or creator-operator whose personal concept, brand, operating style and physical or cultural space are closely linked. The term appears across independent retail, hospitality, culture, adaptive reuse, historic blocks, rural projects and place-making.

It is not a formal national legal category. It does not create a visa or replace the company, licence, lease and work-status questions attached to the actual activity.

02

Who should care

Independent hospitality and food concepts, designers, cultural producers, craft studios, small retail brands, creative communities and people who can operate an underused building or block should watch this language.

The strongest fit is a concept that needs a place and an audience, and whose operator can explain how the site will work commercially and culturally after opening day.

03

What it can unlock

The useful mechanism may be operator recruitment, access to a specific site, a trial or pop-up space, an adaptive-reuse project, an operating partnership, a street or town programme, or a relationship with a government-backed platform.

The label becomes actionable when it connects to a real site, named organiser, current selection route and an operating agreement that can be tested.

04

How it differs from OPC

OPC / 超级个体 is usually company or legal-person oriented: an AI-native micro enterprise built around a founder’s leverage, with common mechanisms such as compute, workspace, registration, tools and incubator or community support.

主理人 is operator-person oriented. Its common mechanisms are physical space, operator recruitment, adaptive reuse and commercial or cultural operation. One founder may fit both descriptions, but the two routes solve different problems.

05

How it differs from non-standard commerce

主理人 describes the operator. 非标商业, or non-standard commerce, describes a place-led commercial format designed around a specific site, audience and mix rather than a standard chain template.

A non-standard commerce programme may recruit 主理人 because the project needs distinctive operators. The business format and the person operating it remain separate concepts.

06

Live example: Gubeikou

Gubeikou’s Gubei Miaojie mechanism connects all three layers: a town government-backed recruitment process, a set of real buildings and courtyards under reuse, and independent operators expected to submit commercial logic, spatial plans, budgets and implementation plans.

The first competition round has closed and first-phase operators have been recruited. The live question for a later entrant is whether another site, phase, direct-contact route or successor mechanism is open.

Ask which sites and phases are open, who controls the property, the lease and renovation structure, the operating obligations, the selection route, and whether a foreign individual, foreign-owned company or local partner can participate in the proposed form.

Bring the concept, customer, revenue logic, spatial needs, operating team and the first version you could test. Those facts make the conversation useful.
