Compare cities against your actual work

List the people, facilities and services you need: a particular lab method, engineering discipline, supplier process, customer group or study setting. Add the travel, logistics and turnaround times that would make the work practical.

Shortlist ecosystems by function

Beijing is often relevant when the dependency involves frontier research, universities, national laboratories, policy and institutional access, AI infrastructure, scientific instruments, aerospace, life sciences or embodied-intelligence validation. Shenzhen and Dongguan become stronger when rapid hardware iteration, electronics and dense supplier feedback dominate. Shanghai and Suzhou can fit advanced industry, multinational commercial networks, biopharma and high-end manufacturing. Other specialized clusters may be the better answer for a specific process, material, customer or field environment.

The shortlist may contain more than one place because research, testing, production and customers can require different ecosystems. At this stage, identify where each required capability is strongest and whether the handoffs remain practical.

Verify access before selecting the city

Published capability establishes relevance. Direct verification establishes whether the project can use it, through which entity or counterpart, on what timeline and under what data, cost and supervision terms. A city remains a candidate until those questions are answered.

Keep a short comparison

End with a short ecosystem comparison tied to the original dependency: first route to verify, credible alternatives, access questions and the evidence that would change the ranking. Company setup and your home may depend on different requirements.
