Xiayuan has decades of artist-settlement history and roughly 80 artist households in a widely cited 2022 report. Its appeal is practical: courtyards, workshops and social knowledge about adapting rural buildings for creative work.
The same report mentioned annual courtyard rents around RMB 60,000–70,000 at that time. Treat that as a dated example, not a present-day quote or village-wide average.
