# Ten places—and a much larger field of possibility.

A comparison set that now asks not only where to live, but who should arrive with you.

## How to read the atlas

Established means a visible, durable new-villager or creative ecosystem. Emerging means project-backed momentum. Opportunity means visitor infrastructure exists but a resident creator community remains thin. Landing base means operating accommodation and services useful before a long lease. Creative node means a market/resource hub rather than a rural base.

## Shortlist logic

Start with your operating model: quiet remote work, studio fabrication, hospitality, agricultural products or public programming. Then compare access, year-round services, available buildings and local partner structure.

Field visits across Huairou and Yanqing suggest that many more villages are operationally plausible than their international visibility implies. Once basic infrastructure is adequate, the decisive question may be whether a few compatible people can settle near one another and form a small bridge between local life and an international social world.

## Do not shortlist from photographs

Use a village guesthouse as a temporary work base before making a housing decision. A credible test includes several ordinary workdays, evening transport, shopping, deliveries, medical access and—where relevant—winter heating.

If you can accept the place’s least attractive recurring condition, its landscape, culture and lower cost become real advantages rather than weekend decoration.

## A cohort may beat a famous address

A ready-made international community reduces friction, but it also narrows the search to mature and often more expensive locations. Two or three friends renting neighbouring homes can create enough companionship and shared capability to make a quieter village viable.

This is not an argument for a foreign enclave. Basic Chinese, translation tools and relationships with neighbours and local institutions still matter. The cohort simply gives each newcomer somewhere to return to after spending the day doing the harder work of integration.
