# Start with your status, not your dream courtyard.

Three layers for a lawful Beijing plan: stay legally, build the right company, then test life beyond the centre.

## Layer 1 — stay legally

China does not currently offer a dedicated digital-nomad visa. Your lawful route depends on what you will actually do in Beijing—not on whether you call yourself a nomad, founder, consultant or remote worker.

Entry permission, accommodation registration, work permission and residence are related but separate. Confirm each before planning a long stay.

- State your real purpose: visit, business meeting, employment, study, family stay or genuine entrepreneurship.
- Confirm the appropriate visa or visa-free entry conditions before travel.
- Register non-hotel accommodation through the current local procedure.
- Do not treat overseas remote work performed from China as automatically outside Chinese work, immigration or tax rules.

> The safest label is the truthful one. A marketing term such as “digital nomad” is not a legal status.

## Layer 2 — build an AI company

Beijing is actively supporting AI-enabled one-person companies, but OPC policy is industrial and entrepreneurship policy—not a digital-nomad visa. Company registration also does not itself create permission to work or reside.

Eligible foreign entrepreneurs may be able to use a recognized incubator as the work-permit applicant during the pre-incorporation startup period. Once the company is formed, the work-permit relationship must be updated through the proper process.

- Choose a recognized incubator or a real operating address—not a decorative registration shell.
- Match the investor, legal representative, business scope and actual role.
- Check foreign-investment, work-permit, tax and annual-compliance requirements separately.
- Apply for OPC recognition and district benefits only when the published eligibility and application window are met.

## Layer 3 — live beyond the centre

Only after status and company systems are workable should a rural base become the default. Huairou offers the lowest international-service friction; Miyun preserves more original village texture; Yanqing offers distance, mountain life and a stronger winter-outdoor proposition.

Begin with legal guest accommodation. Test internet, deliveries, weekday life, winter heating, transport and medical access before searching for a long lease.

- Treat the urban operating base and rural living base as separate decisions.
- Confirm that a host can lawfully receive and register foreign guests.
- Speak to the village committee or township before signing, renovating or operating a business.
- Run legal, structural and utility due diligence on the specific building.
- If arriving as a cohort, agree shared costs and exit terms before booking.

## Mobility and healthcare are part of the plan

An international driving permit or overseas licence alone does not authorize driving in China. Plan for a Chinese temporary permit, a Chinese licence or a realistic car-free life before treating a remote courtyard as home.

Know the nearest suitable hospital, emergency route and payment method before moving beyond the centre.
